Computers are a great resource for gaming, shopping, movies, finance management plus much, much more. One of the major shopping conveniences is traveling resources. According to a recent article in the Wall Street Journal (and consumer research conducted by Forrester Research cited in that article) the number of people using a travel agent to book their travel plans has risen 4% over the past two years. It makes sense, as the myriad options for travel shopping on line has become overwhelming. But then one reason people give for booking online is the fear that a travel agent is suggesting a particular booking with their wallet in mind, not a consumer’s. Here are my top 10 reasons you should always use a travel agent instead of shopping online. Convenient One-Stop Shopping - Travel agents can handle every aspect of your trip from airline tickets to lodging, ground transportation, activities, tours and more. Consumer Advocate – If you should have a problem during your trip, travel agents can act on your behalf to see that proper restitutions are made. Let me see you try to get support from an exclusive online company when your reservation is missing!
Grammy award winning artists Hootie and The Blowfish are taking their charity work to a new level by donating the rights to their best-selling song “Hold My Hand” to aid the working poor. Leading the effort for the band is songwriter and drummer Jim “Soni” Sonefeld who teamed with the nationally-ranked Benedict College Gospel Choir to produce a new recording of the song that is now available for download on music sites including iTunes. All artist proceeds from the sale of the song will benefit The Cooperative Ministry, a non-profit organization that serves the working poor in the band’s hometown of Columbia, South Carolina. Taking its cue from the song’s lyrics, organizers are calling the project, With A Little Love. The idea came about last year as non-profits across South Carolina and the country struggled to raise money during the recession. The Cooperative Ministry was determined to meet the growing demand for its services and needed a powerful way to inspire its community. They teamed with Hootie and The Blowfish, already well-known for its commitment to local charities. The message behind “Hold My Hand”, first recorded in 1994, was a perfect fit for the current day struggles of many working poor. “I [...]

Some Pennsylvania state parks will allow Canada goose hunting when the state’s early resident Canada goose season opens Wednesday, Sept. 1, the Department of Conservation and Natural Resources announced today. Non-migratory Canada goose populations have increased drastically in recent years, causing crop damage and nuisance problems in residential neighborhoods. Park visitors often complain about goose excrement on state park beaches and other facilities, and water quality at some state parks has been adversely affected. Many state parks have taken measures, including anti-goose fencing and/or the use of loud noisemakers, in attempts to deter the waterfowl or scare them away. The statewide season, designed to reduce local nuisance geese populations, runs through Saturday, Sept. 25. Licensed hunters should contact individual park offices for local starting dates and other details. Some parks are closed to hunting. Also, with the early season starting date falling prior to Labor Day, some parks will not allow hunting until Tuesday, Sept. 7, the day after Labor Day. Sunday hunting is not permitted in Pennsylvania. Complete details regarding hunting seasons and bag limits can be found on the Pennsylvania Game Commission’s website at www.pgc.state.pa.us.

A new AOL survey, conducted by The Nielsen Company, reveals the challenges of modern day parenting in a world with social networking. According to the survey, more than half of the children surveyed (54%) don’t personally know all of the friends accepted into their social network. While 76% of parents with kids on Facebook, claim to have “friended” their teens, 29% of teenagers are ready to “un-friend” their parents given the choice, and are twice as likely to want to “un-friend” mom versus dad. In response to the dynamic safety and reputation management needs of today’s teenagers online, AOL today released a new product called Safe Social. This comprehensive tool provides parents a 360 degree view of their child’s social networking life, with an easy-to-read report card of overall social networking activity and identification of potential red flags. With Safe Social, which requires up-front consent from the child, parents gain access to their teen’s friends list and what their teen posts on sites like Facebook, Twitter and MySpace. Parents may also opt to receive real-time alerts regarding potential predator relationships and indications of at-risk behaviors, such as posted references to alcohol use or even bullying and suicide. How AOL SafeSocial [...]
