Facts of the Day

Dahlias were discovered by the Spanish in Mexico at around the same time as potatoes, tomatoes and maize. The Spanish tried eating all of them, but the dahlias were disgusting.

Quote of the Day

If I have ever made any valuable discoveries, it has been owing more to patient attention, than to any other talent. Isaac Newton

DVD Cost Too Much
As DVD sales decline, Hollywood studios are looking for ways to get movies straight to consumers’ living rooms. This has some industry insiders worried that Hollywood is jeopardizing its most valuable asset: the theatrical release date. The movie industry is looking to change the way it distributes content. Problem: If Hollywood studios follow Amazon Kindle’s pricing it won’t make a difference in sales.  The price of any digital content must be cheaper than the packaged product. (npr . . .)

Apple Getting Stupid
Apple is seeking a patent for technology that displays advertising on almost anything that has a screen of some kind: computers, phones, televisions, media players, game devices and other consumer electronics. The technology can freeze the device until the user clicks a button or answers a test question to demonstrate that he or she has dutifully noticed the commercial message. Because this technology would be embedded in the innermost core of the device, the ads could appear on the screen at any time, no matter what one is doing. (ny times . . .)

Fun Website

FAVRD lists interesting things that show up on Twitter, based on the number of times an item has been declared a â’˜favoriteâ’.  FAVRD runs on a no-webcock algorithm. If you see Twitter as a venue for public relations or marketing, or as an audience eager to hear news of a post on your â’˜blogâ’, or a rich hot sticky vertical, or if you consider yourself a web strategist, or if you talk earnestly about social media, or if you can read Techcrunch or listen to the Gillmor gang with a straight face, itâ’s very unlikely the things you say on Twitter will show up here. If however you think of Twitter as a place to amuse, inspire and entertain, then good on you. (link . . .)
