Bird’s Custard was invented in 1837 by Alfred (later Sir Alfred) Bird. A fellow of the Chemical Society, after his death in 1878, his obituary in the Journal of the Chemical Society noted his interests in chemistry, physics and meteorology; his construction of a water barometer in 1859; and his glass harmonica: ‘a beautiful set of harmonised glass bowls extending over four octaves which he used to play with much skill’.
