Top 5 Comics/Graphic Novel Podcasts

February 10, 2009

All major cities have a comic books stores where you can keep up with stock, converse with others and locate a sub culture.  But what if you do not live in a mecca? There really isn’t anyway to find out about new comics or upcoming graphic novels if there isn’t a comic book store within a reasonable distance.

The most viable solution is the internet and specifically podcasts.  Here are my picks for the best Comic/Graphic Novel Podcast.

5. The Comic Podcast Network - This is exactly how it sounds. All sort of podcasters with a focus on comics. Some are video, while most are audio.  What makes this in the top 5 is the history, the Comics Podcast network was formed by Neil Gorman of the Comicology Podcast in 2005.

There isn’t one voice but the flea market of comic book enthusiasts.  This podcast site is more random and although you will find yourself listening to one in particular and outgrow The Comic Podcast Network and go directly to the podcaster’s site.  This is a good place to begin, but not a daily must.

4. Cammy’s Comic Corner is well done, prepared and visually acceptable. It is a weekly video podcast so it is dependable.  There are also contests, forum and the most desirable pull list.

Cammy’s Comic Corner ticks all the boxes for what you want in a podcast.  Cammy put it best,

Friday is my favorite day of the week.  Iâ’m serious.  I love filming, editing, and uploading the show every Friday, then waiting in anticipation for comments.

Start watching, it will make your Fridays all the better.

3. Comic Book Queer is exactly what the name describes, Get Your Flame On!  Comic books have a strong history for loner non-sexual male characters and female heroes stronger, smarter sexually aloof.  The homoerotocism in comic books has been a key factor is developing secret identities and hidden potential which make it all so potent that Comic Book Queer is viewed.

What makes this a top three (3)? It is definitely not the graphics or the design, it is absolutely sub par.  It is three things:

  • Exclusive audio podcast, which means you are able to program at work without worrying about video.  This makes the perfect podcast to enjoy while programming.
  • Forums
  • They actually are entertaining.

2. Fresh Ink is on G4  and hosted by Blair Butler. She has enthusiasm and great taste in comics. This video podcast is also weekly, Friday, but since it is a video it makes programming a little difficult.

What makes this top two (2)?  It is not about Blair wearing too much makeup, I have make sure I look at the covers and listen rather than pay attention to facial expressions.

  • Articulate
  • RSS Feed Option
  • Fresh Ink has the opporunity to have guest that impact the Comic Book/Graphic Novel culture.
  • The speed of the podcast is quite appealing.

1. The Stack on Pulp Secret is my top podcast for those who are interested in comic books. The Stack is the funniest comic book talk show on the web. Each week, the hosts take you through the biggest and best comics on the rack.

What makes this number one (1)?  It is not due to the lack of aticulate and similar aged women.

  • Speed Round
  • Funny
  • Articulate
  • Available via your Tivo

It is a matter of taste

Finding the best podcast is very personal. The host has to match your style of language, speed and tastes.  It might take awhile to find the perfect podcast, but do not fret it will be found.  If you don’t  . . . start your own.
