Tivo and Netflix Not Backward Compatible

October 30, 2008

The ability to stream Netflix movies and TV shows will begin beta testing for select TiVo owners immediately, with an official roll-out scheduled for early December. It will be available on TiVo HD, HD XL, and Series3 DVRs. It will NOT be available with Series2 or DirecTV models, basically, if you want Netflix via your Tivo you have to buy a new one.

Alternative Option

Spending just $99 on the Roku Netflix Player.

  • There are no commercials in any of the movies or TV episodes that are streamed to the TV via Roku Netflix Player.
  • You can watch as many instant movies and TV episodes as you want, as often and as many times as you want. Youâ’re in control of how and when you watch.
  • Your choice will start playing on your TV in as little as 30 seconds. The faster your Internet connection, the faster it will start. To start a movie, use your deviceâ’s remote control and choose from any of the titles that you see on your instant Queue on the TV.
  • Use your remote to Pause, Rewind, and Fast Forward anything you are watching. If you donâ’t finish watching today, you can pick up where you left off tomorrowâ’¦or whenever you want.
  • Your Netflix ready device automatically analyzes the speed of your Internet connection whenever you start a movie or TV show and chooses the optimal image quality for your connection. For fast connections (3 Mbps or more), picture quality is comparable to DVD quality.
  • Whatever kind of TV you have, the Netflix Player is guaranteed to work with it. Connect to the latest HDTV or one that youâ’ve had for years. With standard RCA jacks, S-video, component video, HDMI, and optical audio, the Player will work with virtually any TV, AV receiver, or home theater system.
  • The Netflix Player lets you explore even more possibilities from the worldâ’s largest online movie rental service. Access a growing library of over 10,000 instant movies and TV episodes. Watch as many as you like, as often as you wantâ”with no additional fees. Youâ’re in control with the power to play anytime and finish watching whenever you like.

What you need

  • Netflix Account
    • Use the Netflix website to make a list of instant movies and TV episodes that you are interested in. This list is called the instant Queue. Itâ’s as easy to use as adding DVDs to the Queue that you are already familiar with. You can change and update your instant Queue at any time. When you add a title to your instant Queue, it immediately becomes available to play on your TV via your device. By keeping a full list, you will have a wide variety of choices ready to play immediately on the device.
  • Internet Connection

Now is the time, if you do not have have a Netflix account to get one. If you do, this is the perfect companion.

Personal Opinion

Anyone who feels obligated to watch Netflix via Tivo to the point of needing to buy another Tivo box is not looking at the bottom line.  Another Tivo box is another subscription, selling Tivo box is harder than you think and how much space do you really need?  Spending just $99.00 for a little box to watch your netflix and leave the Tivo to television and TivoCasts.

If you are thinking about going to the movies or renting it out then I can recommend it. I know it is a bit long but the story is pretty good and the acting is spot on. I prefer some of the older movies but this one gets my vote.
