“The Absolute Sandman” is an introduction to The Sandman from Neil Gaiman. Vertigo proudly re-presents the classic debut issue of “the Sandman”. Also included in an exclusive bonus material and an introduction by Neil Gaiman discussing his thought process in how and why bring back “The Sandman”.
One of the tricky thing, as we have seen in other media, how to continue the story line with a gap of years, decades and even generations. Unlike Dallas’ shower scene to cheat viewers of creativity to smoke screen the past events as ‘just a dream’.
Neil Gaiman took some great thought and created this wonderful abyss with a global human reaction to the imprisonment with a encephalitis epidemic (Awakenings). The time and patience the imprisoned Sandman not uttering one word verbally, his mind constantly reminding himself to be “patient”, “waiting”, “watching his captor grown old and die”, and waiting for satisfaction. The captor’s death did not issue his release but pass the responsibilities to the next generation.
The imprisoned Sandman watch decades of fashion pass in front of him as the captor’s come to over release in return for power. The Sandman watched the the chaptor’s mutton chops turn into bare skin with balding head. Each time Sandman doesn’t utter a word, nothing, just still, waiting. Then with old age taking hold of his captor’s body and “it begins” . . . the slow release.
I give this 4.5 out of 5
