Comic Critique Saturday: Umbrella Academy #2

May 3, 2008

Nine years after parting ways, the estranged members of the Umbrella Academy have gathered for the funeral of their guardian and mentor. But their reunion is far from pleasant, as old wounds reopen, murderous mimes embark on a crime spree, and one of the siblings is seduced away by a mysterious villain.

Now no longer go by their numeral naming system, except one. All are adults, except one.

00.01 – The Favorite is now Spaceboy an ego to match.

00.02 – The Brat has become a very independent individual named The Kraken..

00.03 – The Walking Ego has grown into a very beautiful woman, and she knows it.

00.04 – The Mini Ingmar Bergman was the most experimented that left a scar of cruelty

00.05 – The Runaway has returned with the same youthful body as remembered, but with the mind of a lifetime.

00.06 – The Gruesome was given the name The Horror and left to die.

00.07 – The Musician has grown into Vanya Hargreeves.

Dr. Reginald Hargreeves – dead but not without influence. He just doesn’t monkey around.

The Umbrella Academy #2 titled “We Only See Each Other at Weddings and Funerals” after the introduction to the weird characters and zany world of The Umbrella Academy #1 the plot and sub plots progress. The surviving members of the team gather or their Dr. Reginal Hargreeves’, their “father”, funeral. Just like a normal family, especially those with strained relationships, the time of grief doesn’t always bring hugs and comfort. This reunion, like typical dysfunctional family gatherings, surfaced old resentments, battling egos and inform of a drunk relative we have a Mother offering comfort without arms.

The The Umbrella Academy #2 brings new questions, new plots and sub plots, including Dalakesque villains, end of the world and continuation of a tormented musician. Just as we see childhood Hollywood stars become melodramatic and walking the thin line between functional adults and rekindled fame, it is mimicked in our adult once young superheros characters. The inability to have strong human bonds, skills to communicate (including listening) and the all essential team mentality vital for success in life and family. The craziness is not set on pause to fill in answers to a few questions left at the end of #1 and develop new ones to add to my continued curiosity.
